They cannot compose written or spoken discourse well. His explanation for why so many cannot preach is that A: they cannot read literary texts (such as the Bible) correctly-especially not poetry, and B. He believes it perfectly normal to expect people-regular people-to read poetry, and to learn to read it well (although he admits that in modernism and after, poetry seems to have lost its way). What makes this book so impressive is its author, and the fact that he refuses to go gentle into the night of mediocrity. It is for this reason that the book's title echoes the title of the classic work from the 1950's, Why Johnny Can't Read. This book is ostensibly a reflection by a very experienced preacher and biblical scholar on the sad state of the modern pulpit, and how it got that way however, it develops in the process into a reflection on the sad state of literacy in evangelical churches and America in general. Every now and then, a man comes across a book that makes him say: now why cannot more people be like this?
